Curcumin, which is part of the rhizomes, enhances the contractile activity of the gallbladder, the formation of bile acids in the liver cell and the outflow of bile, reduces the level of harmful cholesterol (low density lipoproteins) in the blood.

ACTION OF ACTIVE COMPONENTS

Turmeric is a distant relative of ginger. No wonder that people in India, China, Ceylon and Java call it “yellow ginger”. Among all types of turmeric, Curcuma longa, or turmeric, whose aromatic rhizome is a part of all sorts of spicy seasonings, is of the greatest value. For many of us, turmeric is known, above all, as a spice with a subtle, ginger-like aroma and bitter-pungent taste. It is this color and aroma that give the plant the most important biologically active substances of turmeric, curcuminoids, including curcumin, as well as essential oils.

Thanks to these substances, turmeric has now become regarded as a medicinal plant, mainly stimulating the production of bile and improving the functioning of the gallbladder and liver. Curcuminoids actively affect the smooth muscles of the gallbladder, increasing its tone, contribute to the reduction and emptying of the gallbladder. They also increase the synthesis of bile acids in the liver cells, and with it the excreted amount of bile, accelerate the flow of bile through the intrahepatic bile ducts, thereby preventing thickening and stagnation of bile.

Improvement of choleretic functions by curcuminoids is directly related to cholesterol-regulating action. Due to the stimulating effect on bile acids and phospholipids, curcumin accelerates the breakdown in bile of low-density cholesterol and triglycerides, thus reducing the likelihood of formation of cholesterol clots in the liver, and especially in the gall bladder, which turn into cholesterol stones.

It is important to note that curcuminoids have a strong antioxidant effect. They protect liver cells from oxidative damage, prevent the oxidation of bile acids themselves, the final products of cholesterol metabolism, and promote their elimination. And curcumin also reduces the synthesis of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, the main mediators of inflammation of the gallbladder.

In addition, biologically active substances of turmeric are involved in the development of special enzymes (for example, glutathione peroxidase), which protect the liver from the effects of toxins and xenobiotics (pesticides, household chemicals, drugs). Turmeric not only cleans and improves blood circulation, but also stimulates the formation of red blood cells. This plant regulates metabolism, correcting both redundancy and insufficiency of metabolic processes, and promotes the absorption of protein.
